1710177125 Pro-Environmental Collective Actions: A Review in Social Identity Perspective and Suggestions

Collective action as a form of collective behaviour to bring about change offers an effective way to address many social issues, including climate change. This article aims to examine how pro-environmental collective action has been addressed and to provide a summary of related research to the Turkish literature. Accordingly, in the present review, collective action models based on Social Identity Theory are discussed in the context of pro-environmental collective actions against the threat of climate change. There are mainly four different collective action models in the literature on the subject. There are four major collective action models on this subject: the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA), The Encapsulated Model of Social Identity in Collective Action (EMSICA), the Social Identity of Pro-Environmental Action (SIMPEA), the Environmental Identity Model of Environmental Collective Action (EIMECA). The main variables of these models are perceived injustice, group efficacy and social identity. In this article, we discuss how Social Identity Theory and collective actions relate to pro-environmental behaviors. We then examine research findings on analyzing pro-environmental collective actions using social identity models. Finally, we provide a general discussion of these models and offer suggestions for future studies.
